I began my career in veterinary medicine at 15 years old because Dr. McIntosh and Dr. McGehee were willing to take a youngin without experience and I am forever grateful! I enrolled in the Health Occupations Students of America at MacArthur High School where I had the opportunity to attend a “zero” hour class so that I could have early dismissal to work at the vet’s office and I loved it! I encourage students to volunteer and see all aspects of a career in veterinary medicine which includes everything from loving on the puppies and kittens to washing the dirty laundry left from a sick puppy or kitten who has vomited or has diarrhea. The recommendation of volunteering goes for any career choice. When I talk to the 5th graders at Schlather Intermediate for their science day, I encourage them to make good grades & volunteer no matter what they want to be when they grow up. Volunteering improves the quality of life in our community as well as helping students pursue their dreams but doesn’t end once you get a job. I would love to be the Dr. McGehee to a student or have the opportunity to give a presentation to the 5th graders about “Science In Veterinary Medicine”. We have helped out with 4H students, Girl Scouts, National Night Out, Bark for Life, Dog Wash Fundraisers for the Humane Society, Schertz Fest, Cibolo Fest, and presentations at the Kids Academy. Please do not hesitate to give me a call if you would like us to participate in any way!
As far as volunteering with us, we have an age requirement of 15 years old for volunteering. If you are interested, then swing by and ask us for a volunteer application. If you are under 18 years old, a parent or legal guardian must sign. Please have an idea of days and times that would work for best with your schedule to volunteer with us. Once you submit your application, our volunteer coordinator will then get back with you about an available time.
Meet our volunteers!
